An Alternative Hand Selection For Limit Hold ‘Em

An Alternative Hand Selection For Limit Hold ‘Em

I am in favor of safe, conservative approaches to pre-flop hand selection. It makes little sense to me to play marginal hands to see if I hit the flop because I know that I will only hit a hand on the flop around 30% of the time. I play poker for fun but I also play for profit. To be profitable I cannot play marginal hands in limit poker. Now I really like playing limit hold ’em. I play it profitably and I do not subject my bankroll to the wild fluctuations one finds in no-limit hold ’em. I restrict my no-limit play to tournament situations where my risk is actually fixed by the amount of the buy-in. That being said, I am always looking for ways to think about which hands to play. Ken Warren suggests a way to approach limit hold ’em that is easy to understand, allows for tight, aggressive play, and does not depend on memorization of groups of hands. In Warren’s approach you generally only play three types of hands. Below is my take on Warren’s thinking: Pairs: All pocket pairs are fair game in this category. But remember position counts so in early position play AA, KK, QQ, TT while in middle position expand to 99, 88, 77 and in late position and on the button you can expand to any pocket pair. In the blinds play even tighter than early position and limit your selection to AA, KK, QQ. Suited Ax: Suited aces are strong hands! They range in equity from quite high to just about even money. In this group position rules as well. From the blinds play AKs, AQs, and from early position expand to AJs through A9s. Middle position adds A8s and A7s while in late position and the button you can play A6s through A2s. Blackjack Hands (hands that add up to 20 or 21): The value of cards is the same as in blackjack. An Ace is 11 while all picture cards are valued at 10. All other cards are worth their face value. AJ equals 21 while KJ equals 20 as does A9. I tend to avoid these hands with the...

Heisman Trophy Top-10 for October 2, 2006

Heisman Trophy Top-10 for October 2, 2006

The month of September came to a close this past Saturday and the Ohio State Buckeyes have clearly established themselves as the nation’s No. 1 team. Three of the team’s first five wins have come over ranked opponents with two of those wins coming on the road. OSU beat then-No. 2 Texas (defending champs) in Austin back on September 9 (24-7) and last Saturday night trounced No. 13 Iowa by the score of 38-17. QB Troy Smith has now led OSU to 12 straight wins (12-0 ATS as well) and enters the month of October as the Heisman front-runner. My entire Heisman top-10 follows. Heisman Top-10 Monday, October 2 1) TROY SMITH (Ohio State) Last Week: 1. Smith threw two TDPs in the game’s first half, as OSU led Iowa 21-10 at the half last Saturday night in Iowa City. The Buckeyes pulled away in the second half as they opened the third quarter on an 11-play 80-yard TD drive (Smith’s third TDP of the game) and followed with a FG on their next drive that not only put them up 31-10 but took eight minutes off the clock. Later in the fourth quarter, Smith tossed his career-high fourth TDP to end OSU’s scoring for the night. In the 38-17 win, Smith finished by completing 16-of-25 passes for 186 yards with four TDPs and no INTs. He even ran for 20 yards, something he’s rarely done this year. The win gives Smith a career mark of 10-1 vs ranked opponents. In leading Ohio State to 12 straight wins (the nation’s longest active winning streak after TCU lost last Thursday to BYU), he’s completed 66.2 percent of his throws for an average of 232.9 YPG with 24 TDPs and just four INTs. How’s that for a Heisman candidate? Ohio State goes ‘bowling’ next week, as the Falcons of Bowling Green visit Columbus. Smith’s season stats are: 84-of-128 65.6 percent 1,070 yards 12 TDPs 2 INTs / 22 carries 24 yards 1.1 YPC 0 TDs. 2) ADRIAN PETERSON (Oklahoma). Last Week: 2. AP and the Oklahoma Sooners had the week off and I’ll leave the junior in my second spot pending his upcoming performance against Texas...

Inside the Boxscores Week 5 Part 1

Inside the Boxscores Week 5 Part 1

Inside the Boxscores is a weekly feature from Matt Fargo that has been widely recognized as the best summation in college football. He takes an in-depth look at each game and pulls out the most pertinent information that will help you handicap games in the future. College football is filled with quirky plays, misleading scores and surprise endings. Fargo takes you inside the action. Southern Miss 19 U-C-F 14 Central Florida outgained the Golden Eagles 325-273 but turnovers were the difference. The Golden Knights fumbled at the Southern Mississippi one-yard line and also threw an interception at their own one-yard line that was returned for a touchdown. They also missed a 23-yard field goal in their only scoring chance in the first half. Southern Mississippi finished 3-14 on third down conversions. BYU 31 TCU 17 TCU actually outgained the Cougars 437-393 but the Horned Frogs could not execute in the first half and fell behind and couldn’t recover. TCU’s first four drives totaled 194 yards but a fumble inside the redzone and a missed field goal killed two opportunities. Even worse, three of those four drives were 10 plays or more. BYU finished with just 72 yards rushing on 34 carries (2.1 ypc). (2) Auburn 24 SOUTH CAROLINA 17 The Tigers dodged a huge bullet as the Gamecocks had a chance to tie this game up but turned it over on downs at the five-yard line to end the game. In the first half, South Carolina turned the ball over twice inside the Auburn 30-yard line. The Gamecocks outyarded the Tigers 349-307 but going just 1-4 inside the redzone was the ultimate difference. Auburn was held to 127 yards rushing on 35 carries (3.6 ypc). (24) Rutgers 22 SOUTH FLORIDA 20 South Florida blocked a field goal late in the fourth quarter setting up a possible game-tying drive. The Bulls drove 66 yards to pull within two points with 15 second left but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful. South Florida had three turnovers and also missed a field goal. Rutgers controlled the clock by over 14 more minutes thanks to 226 yards rushing on 45 carries (5.0 ypc). (13) Tennessee 41 MEMPHIS 7 Tennessee...

Play No Limit Holdem Poker in the Bahamas With PokerStars

Play No Limit Holdem Poker in the Bahamas With PokerStars

The popular PokerStars Caribbean Adventure promotion is back and you can get qualified for it now on PStars.? Probably the big allure of this tournament is the fact that it is played in the Bahamas at the Atlantis Resort and Casino in early January so what better place in the world could you think of to go to play poker? This is a poker vacation that even your wife/husband could get behind if you win a prize package, so you might as well give it a shot. There are $15,000 packages to be won through satellites and of course the game is No Limit Hold’em. You can buy in directly to a satellite tournament or play in steps for as little as FPP’s (frequent player points) so you can get in for free. The winner of this event took home $2.2 Million last year, so it is well worth it for the prize money as well as the vacation. The other nice thing about these qualifying packages is that you not only get your buy in paid for, but with $15k you have plenty of money left over to pay for travel and expenses while you are there. Send your wife to the spa, go to a nice dinner, have a few drinks, whatever you want! The tournament runs January 7th to the 16th, so you have plenty of time to qualify and the earlier the better because early on in these promotions less players tend to know about them and it is easier to win your way in. There are a few promos a year that I like to make sure I try to win my way into on PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker and this is certainly one of them. Go to the ‘Events’ tab and then ‘PCA’ tab to find a listing of all the satellites. I know I will be playing a few of these satellite tournaments just because I think it is a great value for your money. Good luck and hope to see you...

Packers/Eagles MNF Preview

Packers/Eagles MNF Preview

Brett Favre on the Monday Night stage-I’m watching and playing Monday Night’s big matchup between the Packers and the Eagles. The Eagles come in as 11-point favorites as they try to light up the score board yet again this week. Brett Favre showed last week that he’s still got it throwing for 340 yards and three touchdowns. But more importantly, he didn’t throw an interception for the first time in 12 games. There are three major questions to ask when looking at Monday night’s matchup. Was Green Bay’s offensive performance last week a fluke? How much better is Philadelphia than Detroit? And there is one more question that will come up later. First off, there is no fluke about Brett Favre. The guy is perhaps the NFL’s best competitor of all time, but at times his competitiveness is to a fault. That’s why he is so prone to throwing costly interceptions. He tries to make big plays for his team by forcing throws instead of taking what the defense is giving him. The Eagles offense is looking quite a bit better than Detroit’s to answer my second question, but their defenses are comparable. Philly gave up 24 points to the 49ers last week and 30 points to the Giants the week before. However, the Packers have been very good at giving up points as well. They are allowing their opponents to score an average of 28 points per game after the first three weeks and none of their opponents have had a Donovan McNabb at quarterback or a Brain Westbrook at tailback. This leads us to the our final question which will give us our winning side. How much better is Philadelphia’s offense than the previous Packers opponents? If you can crack this egg, then you can capitalize of Monday night’s big game. Jimmy Boyd has looked at every angle of this game and I have uncovered Monday Night’s big winner. When you really go over the offensive and defensive matchups on a position by position level, the answer is clear. If you’re playing Monday Night Football this week, make sure you’re on board with Jimmy...

The Future of Online Gambling!

The Future of Online Gambling!

Online gambling banned On Monday, 2nd October, the U.S. Congress has approved a bill to ban Internet gambling. The bill has been sent to President Bush for his signatures, after which it will become a law. The shares of online gaming companies are already experiencing a landslide with most company’s shares dropping to as much as 50%. The major players who suffered the most include PartyGaming, 888 Plc, and Sportingbet. If it becomes a law, the online banks and credit card companies in the U.S. will be prohibited to transfer pay to any online gambling companies. What is the future of online gambling companies? This is a tough forecast to make, but at present things do look like that it could signal the beginning of the end of the flourishing online gaming industry to a great extent since these online gambling companies generate a substantial amount of revenue from U.S. gamblers alone. So if this is banned in the U.S, it may well cause online gambling sites to lose the bulk of their revenue. The online gambling companies for sure won’t sit and just watch as millions are at stake for each of them. But we have to keep our fingers crossed and wait and watch what...

How to Play the Don’t Pass in Craps

How to Play the Don’t Pass in Craps

If you have ever played craps, you probably noticed the don’t pass betting area that wraps around the table right beside the pass line. Chances are that no one had a bet on it either. This does not mean that it is a bad bet. In fact, the don’t pass is the best bet on the craps table. Mathematically, with a don’t pass bet the casino only has a 1.36 % advantage over you. Once a point is established, and you can lay odds against the point number, the house advantage begins to drop dramatically. If you lay double odds, the advantage for the casino is 0.45%. So why is it that you so rarely see players betting the don’t pass? First of all, it is poorly promoted by casinos as an option. When you walk up to the table and ask how to play, the dealer will tell you to make a pass line bet. It’s not unheard of for a dealer to suggest the don’t pass, but it is done infrequently. Secondly, people often are not interested in playing the don’t pass. They feel that they are betting against the shooter and that this is rude and will bring them bad luck. To be honest, a don’t pass bet is betting against the shooter. The person throwing the dice is trying to roll the point number before rolling a seven. However, the don’t pass bet will win if the seven DOES roll before the point number is repeated. Although business and social forces discourage don’t pass betting, it remains an option on the game and there is no reason not to play it. The seven is the most common number that the dice are going to roll and this means it is more likely that the don’t pass will win when there is a point number. The toughest part about winning on the don’t pass is during the come out roll. At this stage of the game the don’t pass will lose when a seven or eleven roll. But if your bet can survive the threat posed by the seven during the come out roll, then you have an excellent chance of...
